AphyOS is a new OS from the Swiss startup Apostrophy AG, which plans to end the duopoly of Apple and Google on mobile platforms. The software startup, founded by mobile industry veterans, will unveil the operating system this week at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
The startup from Switzerland plans to enter the arena, which after unsuccessful attempts to challenge the Google Android and Apple iPhone ecosystems, has already been abandoned by Microsoft, Samsung Electronics, HP and even the Firefox Mozilla Foundation.
12 years ago, Microsoft released Windows Phone 7 – an operating system that became a success and a failure for the company at the same time
The Apostrophy AG team recruited former software engineers from a joint venture called KaiOS. The startup is run by Petter Nebi, who in 2008 founded Punkt, a feature phone brand aimed at people who want to stay connected without being overwhelmed by the distractions of today’s smartphone industry. He is joined by CEO Steve Cistulli, a business expert with 25 years of experience in the mobile industry.

Unlike Apple and Google, Apostrophy plans to charge a subscription fee for its combination of software and services – its key customers will be hardware manufacturers, not end users. Punkt is also among the company’s customers. Apostrophy now has over 50 employees worldwide and raised $11 million this year.
The company’s AphyOS software is built on top of an open-source version of Android called GrapheneOS. The OS works by separating apps to prevent user behavior from being tracked (not unlike the changes Apple made to iOS on the iPhone that affected Meta ad sales). Aphy will be able to run Android apps, but won’t include Google Mobile Services or the Play Store by default.
