Mack Walters, one of the creators of the Mass Effect franchise, has left BioWare after more than 19 years with the company. He started out as a writer for Jade Empire, then took on a more prominent role in the original Mass Effect game, before becoming lead writer for the second and third installments of the trilogy.
“With a new year comes new adventures,” Walters wrote on LinkedIn. “As some of you already know, I decided to leave BioWare at the end of last year. Those 19 years changed my life, to say the least, and it made the choice very difficult.”
Walters’ LinkedIn profile now states that he has taken a career break.
Although Walters is best known for his work on the Mass Effect series, he recently served as the production director for the upcoming Dragon Age game Dreadwolf. It’s set to be BioWare’s next big game and the long-awaited follow-up to 2014’s Inquisition. During his time at BioWare, Walters also worked as a writer on the ill-fated Anthem project.
Walters was creative director for Mass Effect Andromeda, and most recently served as project director for Mass Effect Legendary Edition, a remaster of the franchise’s original trilogy. Walters has also written numerous Mass Effect-related graphic novels that expand on the games’ narratives.
