Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross test drive: two-liter naturally aspirated engine and front-wheel drive

Once upon a time, a detailed review of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross model was already published at ITC, then they dealt with the updates of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 2021 car – but here is a new meeting! The reason for which is indicated in the title: a two-liter naturally aspirated engine is installed under the hood of the test car. Moreover, along with the engine, the transmission and equipment have changed. But let’s talk about everything in order – in the “TOP-5 questions and answers” format.

Unrecognizable

What about the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross design? Are there any special features on the 2 liter version?

If you describe the design of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross crossover in one phrase, it will be the phrase “many straight lines and even more angles.” The car looks like a sharpened samurai sword – sharp bends in the front bumper, straight lines on the sides, sharp headlights. By the way, the optics have changed during the update: running lights and turn signals are located on top, but the main headlights are now assembled in one block and installed a little lower.

But the crossover Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is the case when during the “facelift” the rear part changed almost as much: a new trunk lid and lights, solid glass.

If we talk about the 2-liter version, then it can be identified only by the original wheels – also 18-inch and black and silver, but they have their own design. And the 2-liter version can be identified by the lack of a front view camera lens.

Updated version Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross I like it much more than the first option: the car has not lost its well-known original appearance, but has become more traditional in details. First of all, we are talking about the solution of the rear part – solid glass has improved the view, and the new lights look nice. The test 2-liter version is recognized only by the wheel rims and in the absence of a camera lens – this is a feature of the configuration, which I will talk about below.

And what about the salon? Are there changes, differences?

Looking to compare. If with the first incarnation of the car, the key changes are gathered in the center of the front panel: a new 8-inch display – it is larger and moved closer to the driver. All this made it possible to transfer control completely to the touch display, abandoning the touch pad on the central console – as a result, the latter also changed.

Plus traditional instruments and a steering wheel, as well as the usual “climate” unit and seat heating buttons: everything is exactly as you expect from a Mitsubishi car.

Now a few words about the 2-liter version. The main and most noticeable difference is the combined finish of the seats: artificial leather and fabric. But such seats look great and provide good body fixation.

A similar combined upholstery is used in the rear part of the cabin, where passengers also have a sufficient reserve of space, adjustment of the angle of inclination of the back of the sofa, an armrest with glass holders, as well as heated seats. Finally, the trunk: it lacks an electric lid and depth (the floor is too high), but there are niches for small things and a full-sized spare tire.

Salon Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross – This is an array of the front panel made of pleasant “soft” plastic (such even on the doors) and the central protruding part with a new display. Sufficient space in the back, adjustable backrest angle, comfortable armrest. But the trunk is surprisingly high at the floor level – but the explanation for that is right under it. The differences of the 2-liter version come down to the upholstery of the seats, and again to what is not there: this time there is no shift button SAWC. And that’s whyWhat…

Because the 2 liter version has front wheel drive?! How does such a car drive?

Yes, yes, that’s right. The car with a naturally aspirated 2-liter engine has front-wheel drive – all-wheel drive is reserved only for the maximum version with a 1.5-liter turbo engine. Among other differences, it should be noted the “automatic”: as before, the CVT variator is used, but now in the Sport Mode there are six fixed gear positions against eight in the 1.5-liter turbo version. And there is the AYC (Active Yaw Control) system.

It is interesting that the 2-liter “atmospheric” develops the same 150 hp, as well as the 1.5-liter “turbo”. The power is the same – but the characters are different. If the turbo engine started slowly at the start, but gave out more power with increasing revolutions, then the car with a volumetric atmospheric engine starts much more actively.

But with a set of revolutions, the entire acceleration turns into one continuous flat line – and only closer to the limit of 5.5-6 thousand, the variator begins to play with the gear ratios, imitating the change of gears. As a result, the revolutions slightly change, the tonality of the engine changes, and a feeling of dynamic acceleration with the “floor” pedal appears.

To the credit of the 2-liter Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross car, it fulfills its acceleration standard to “hundreds” without any problems, although the result of 11 seconds does not worry the mind. It is much more pleasant not to squeeze out all the juices, but to drive simply with soft accelerations – it turns out quietly and smoothly.

By the way, the suspension is also smooth. The more unevenness scattered randomly on the road, the better the impression of the chassis of the car, which leaves somewhere below, in the bowels of completely independent suspensions. The only problem is when driving over a large transverse joint or a lying policeman, when you can get a noticeable kick. But otherwise – silence and smoothness.

It’s real: another plus of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross car is its decent sound insulation. In short, you ride in relative comfort and seem to cut yourself off from the outside world. Nothing dares to disturb, especially any hint of handling. The light steering wheel gives a minimum of feedback, it makes almost three turns from the stop, when maneuvering, rolls are noticeable. Sport (on behalf of Eclipse) is not enough here. Instead, readiness for bad roads (on behalf of Cross) is abundant here.

A 2-liter 4-cylinder 4B11 gasoline engine with a proprietary system is installed under the hood. MIVEC changes in gas distribution phases. It develops 150 liters. (compared to the 1.5 turbo engine), but loses in terms of torque – 198 Nm versus 250 Nm. This is an option Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross gets his CVT-Variator and front-wheel drive, the car is noticeably lighter (1485 kg versus 1550 kg), but still “the moment decides”: acceleration from 0-100 km / h takes about 11 seconds – although it is still noticeably faster than promised by the passport! Consumption in the city is 8-11 liters depending on driving conditions, but on average it is “ten” or even a little lower. Consumption on the highway at a speed of 80-90 km/h is about 6 liters per 100 km, at a speed of 110-120 km/h it increases to 7.5-8 liters per 100 km.

How much do you ask for such a car? And in general, what versions are offered?

In fact, Ukraine currently offers only two versions of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross car, and they differ in everything – engines, transmissions, equipment. And the price.

The range of Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross models in Ukraine is opened by the Intense configuration. She means the following: an atmospheric 2-liter engine, front-wheel drive, “automatic” in the form of a CVT variator, front and side airbags, inflatable safety curtains, heated front seats, heated rear seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights heated glass, Mitsubishi Connect 2 multimedia, rear view camera, heated steering wheel, 2-zone “climate”, etc. Price Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 2.0 CVT 2WD Intense – From 1.2 million UAH or about $30 thousand

The Ultimate version is located on the level above, which is noticeably different: it is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbo engine and S-AWC all-wheel drive, the equipment additionally includes a panoramic glass roof with a sunroof, all-round vision, leather seat upholstery, a projection display, etc. Price Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 1.5T CVT 4WD Ultimate – from UAH 1.4 million. or about $35 thousand

Nominally, the 2-liter version is “younger”, but it already has everything you need and even a little more: a separate “climate”, multimedia with an 8-inch display and smartphone connection, a rearview camera, LED headlights, heating of all seats and steering wheel, heating windshield

After all: Is this a second chance for the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross?

Once I called the article about the updated crossover Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross with the words “second chance” – and now I will say “chance 2.0”!

Because the 2-liter crossover Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross offers all its key advantages: it looks good and drives normally, gives a full list of equipment for the comfort of people – and all this for less money than is asked for a 1.5-liter turbo.

Of course, the latter has its advantages in the form of all-wheel drive and maximum configuration. But, I think, the bestseller in this pair has already been determined. After all, such a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 2.0 appeals to the principle of reasonable sufficiency – and I frankly like this approach.
