The first article of the Ukrainian Wikipedia – “Atom” – appeared on January 30, 2004. It was started by Yuriy Kovalchuk from Kyiv, who was then living in the Japanese city of Fuji. In just four years, the Ukrainian chapter had more than 100,000 articles, and at the beginning of 2020, their number reached one million.
Today, the Ukrainian version of Wikipedia has more than 1 million 226 thousand articles and ranks 16th among the 329 language sections of the online encyclopedia. In 2022, the Ukrainian-language Wikipedia marked a great achievement — it was visited more than one billion times a year for the first time.
“The Ukrainian-language section of Wikipedia is an important source of information for Ukrainian men and women, especially during the war. October of last year became the second most visited place in the history of Ukrainian Wikipedia — then it was viewed almost 110 million times.
Articles about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and various aspects of the Russian-Ukrainian war provide important context for millions of people. The community of Wikipedia volunteers continues its work — several hundred new encyclopedic articles in Ukrainian appear every day.”
Ilya Korniyko,
Chairman of the Board of the NGO “Wikimedia Ukraine”.
An extensive network of volunteers from Ukraine and around the world is engaged in filling out the Ukrainian Wikipedia, and anyone who wants to can become a part of this community.
Every year before the encyclopedia’s birthday, Wikimedia Ukraine organizes a Wikimarathon – a campaign to fill Wikipedia with as many new articles as possible. All participants who create at least one article in compliance with the marathon rules by February 1 inclusive will receive souvenirs with the Wikipedia logo. As part of the Wikimarathon, there will also be dozens of offline meetings in many regions of Ukraine — from Prykarpattia to Kharkiv Oblast — and for Ukrainians abroad.
