A video posted on the WeChat video channel of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) showed the development of Chinese airborne radars. Towards the end of the clip, computer graphics were shown showing three unidentified aircraft flying.

The aircraft was similar to the J-20 stealth fighter, but without the nose wings, tail fins and fins, and the diamond wings appeared to be larger than those of the J-20, giving it a mixed wing and fuselage configuration. Observers have speculated that this could be China’s next-generation fighter jet.

At Airshow China 2022 held in Zhuhai (Guangdong Province, South China) in November 2022, AVIC unveiled a concept model of the next-generation fighter, which also featured a tailless design like the aircraft shown in this video.

Other countries are also conducting research and development into next-generation fighter jets, and tailless designs like the one shown by China are among the most popular concepts, said Chinese military aviation expert Fu Qianshao.

The tailless design is believed to give the next (sixth) generation fighter superior stealth in all directions compared to the current fifth generation fighters. At the same time, the hybrid wing body design will provide more lift, longer range and lower fuel consumption. Still, analysts believe that without a vertical tail, the new aircraft will lose maneuverability unless it uses other designs or technologies to compensate. These could be thrust vectoring motors and split brake rudders or other innovative approaches.

American military contractor Lockheed Martin, as part of the Next Generation Air Dominance project, is also considering a tailless design for the next generation American fighter.

Based on the information currently available, China has begun research and development of the next-generation fighter jet, and it has every chance of eventually surpassing the US, Fu said.
