According to Giant Freakin Robot, HBO Max is working on a series based on the game Hogwarts Legacy. The news comes amid an ongoing scandal involving the views and statements of JK Rowling, the author of the fantasy universe, as well as the game’s huge popularity and impressive sales.
After the failure of last year’s film “Fantastic Beasts: The Mystery of Dumbledore”, there were rumors that Warner Bros. Discovery may abandon the franchise. The plans for the series seem to be directly related to the success of the game – perhaps the company saw that the key to success lies not only in the name of the franchise, but also in the quality implementation of the project.
The Hogwarts Legacy series is still in the early stages of development, so details are few and far between. Presumably, like the game, the series will take place before the events of the original Harry Potter novels and even before the spinoff Fantastic Beasts. The game is set in the 19th century, but features some familiar names, such as Professor Matilda Weasley, the ancestor of the Weasley family from the novels.
While it’s too early to make any casting announcements, some Hogwarts alumni may be interested – Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley, has expressed his desire to be involved in the development of the franchise if it happens.
Meanwhile, the game is gaining popularity. Two weeks after its release, Hogwarts Legacy sold 12 million copies of the game. According to Variety, the game has already brought Warner Bros. Games $850 million, making it the largest game release in the company’s history. Hogwarts Legacy also set a new streaming record, becoming the game itself on Twitch with a colossal peak of 1.28 million concurrent viewers.
Players have spent more than 267 million hours in the world of Hogwarts Legacy. WB Games talks about a “bright future” and a long-term franchise
