The company ASUS did not choose the time for the announcement of the portable console very well – on April 1, many took it as a joke. However, the company has confirmed that ASUS ROG Ally is a serious gaming device that is capable of surpassing Steam Deck in many respects. The console will run on Windows 11 and use a special AMD processor.

  • ASUS ROG Ally runs games not only from Steam, but all are compatible with Windows 11
  • The console also supports external ASUS RTX XG video cards
  • It is slightly lighter and smaller than the Steam Deck, while it works much quieter

YouTuber Dave2D said that the ROG Ally is equipped with a 7” touchscreen with an aspect ratio of 16:9, a resolution of 1080p and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. As a reminder, the Steam Deck screen with a ratio of 16:10 has a resolution of 800p at 60 Hz. At the same time, the ASUS console is thinner and slightly lighter than the Valve device. It’s not yet clear how the best screen will affect battery life.

ASUS’ first portable gaming console is equipped with an AMD Ryzen hybrid processor specially designed for this product. ASUS does not specify what type of processor is used in it, only immodestly calling it “the fastest APU”. According to the video, this is a 4nm Zen4 processor with RDNA 3 graphics. It is also possible that we are facing a special AMD Phoenix APU.

The console has a special XG connector, which means the possibility of using powerful external ASUS video cards for laptops. The last released XG graphics card was the RTX 4090, which costs $2000.

The cooling system of the console deserves special mention. It features two fans that are measured to produce 20dB of noise compared to the Steam Deck’s 37dB.

The success of the ROG Ally depends on its price and performance compared to the $399 Steam Deck and more expensive handhelds like the $850 Ayaneo 2. ASUS has not yet announced the price and start date of sales of the console.
