Artifact was initially positioned as an app for viewing news picked for you by AI algorithms, but now it is becoming more and more like a social network.
The app includes a Home tab with a feed of articles that II Artifact thinks you’ll enjoy; the “Headings” tab, which contains collections of articles on topics; and a Profile tab that visualizes your browsing history after you’ve read 10 posts
Users can now comment on any article in the app, and following Reddit’s example, Artifact will also allow you to upvote and downvote other people’s comments – building their reputation and helping moderate discussions.
Artifact owners (aka Instagram founders) Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger say the reputation score “reflects the community’s well-deserved trust and will help weigh people’s opinions and filter out unwanted users or topics.”
The app will notify you when your comments get upvoted or downvoted, or when one of your contacts comments on the text you’ve read.
You can now add a photo and bio to your profile (which will obviously increase your reputation), but you need to verify your phone number first. You’ll also need this if you want to switch to another device and keep your history and Artifact settings.
The app was first introduced in January and was available for download on iOS and Android devices at the end of February. Social networking features were added to the app almost simultaneously with the launch of a Twitter counterpart in Notes from Substack, a popular news platform. So it is interesting to watch the future updates of competitors.
