The animated film Super Mario Bros. at the Movies ( review ) continues to show great results at the box office. The film grossed a substantial $87 million in its second weekend. Ticket sales were down just 41% from its opening weekend, giving it the best second weekend for an animated film ever. The video game adaptation has so far grossed $347.8 in North America and $678 worldwide.
“Super Mario Brothers in the movies” continues to attract viewers, even despite the release of new films. So, the comedy-horror “Renfield” (review), which was predicted to take second place, failed at the box office and collected a modest box office of $7.7 million, taking fourth place. It lost to The Vatican Exorcist (review) and John Wick 4. Interestingly, the shooting of “Renfield” cost $65 million, and the collection of the first weekend amounted to $7.7 million. At the same time, “The Exorcist of the Vatican” cost the authors $18 million, and brought in $9.1 million for the weekend.
John Wick 4, starring Keanu Reeves, added $7.925 million to its box office in its fourth weekend, bringing its total to $160.1 million in North America and $349 million worldwide. Thus, it was possible to overtake a third of the franchise, which brought in $328 million at the box office.
Rounding out the top five this week is director Ben Affleck’s “Air” (review), which collected $7.7 million this week, with a domestic total of $33.28 million and a worldwide cume of $54 million.
Super Mario Bros. is expected to become the first film of 2023 to gross more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office. After two weekends in theaters, it’s already the highest-grossing film of the year, surpassing Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum of Solace ($474 million). Mario also became the most successful video game adaptation in history, surpassing 2016’s Warcraft ($439 million) and Pokemon: Detective Pikachu ($449 million).
