The plot of the series “Idol” will tell the story of the young pop star Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), whose public nervous breakdown leads to the cancellation of a concert tour. The singer, who is in an unstable mental state, meets Tedros (The Weeknd), the owner of one of the nightclubs in Los Angeles, and starts a professional, romantic and slightly abusive relationship with him.
Trailer footage and the use of the song “Gimme More” hint that “Idol” may have drawn inspiration from moments in Britney Spears’ life and career.
In addition to Abel Tesfaye (real name The Weeknd, recently recognized as the most popular artist in the world) and Depp, the cast includes Dan Levy, Dwayne Joy Randolph, Eli Roth, Hari Nef, Jane Adams, Ruby Jane, Mike Dean, Rachel San Son and other.
The show began filming back in November 2021, but was later reviewed from a creative perspective. Tesfaye expressed displeasure that the film showed the problem from a “female point of view”, and the director of the series, Amy Seimetz, left the team, having shot 80% of the material at the time.
The series is written by Joe Epstein, and the executive producer team led by Levinson is joined by Tesfaye himself, Ashley Levinson, Kevin Turen (X), Aaron L. Gilbert, The Weeknd’s manager Wassim Slaby and creative director LaMar Taylor. Mary Laws, who co-created The Heirs, co-wrote and co-produced the show.
The film by Lily-Rose Depp’s father, actor Johnny Depp, will also debut at Cannes and will be the opening film of the festival. In the historical drama “Jeanne du Barry” Johnny plays King Louis XV – and returns to the big screen after a break of almost three years.
