The International Committee of the Red Cross has teamed up with Twitch streamers to urge gamers not to commit war crimes in online shooters. The organization hopes that its “Game by the Rules” event will introduce gamers to the laws of real warfare. The organization even created its own Fortnite mode to help players understand these rules.

“Currently, armed conflicts are more widespread than ever. For people suffering from their effects, it is not a game. They destroy lives and leave communities devastated. So we encourage you to play FPS with these rules of war to show everyone that even wars have rules that protect humanity on real-life battlefields.”
As part of the event on the ICRC’s official Twitch channel, streamers played while complying or attempting to comply with the laws of armed conflict. The list of games included PUBG Battlegrounds, Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, Rainbow 6 Siege and Escape From Tarkov. The rules provided for the following restrictions:
- Do not shoot at enemies that are shot or unresponsive
- Do not target non-hostile NPCs
- Do not target civilian buildings
- Use first aid kits on everyone who needs help
It is not the first time that the Red Cross calls on players to think carefully about the rules of warfare. Back in 2017, the organization held a similar DLC event for Arma III called Law of War. Gamers put down their weapons and take on the role of aid workers, responding to players calling for help, defusing mines and communicating with an investigative journalist. At the time, the DLC raised a total of $176,667 donated to the Red Cross, according to Bohemia Interactive.
