Bloobberg’s Mark Gurman has shared new details about the connectors and power supply for Apple’s mixed reality headset. Four months ago, he reported that the device would get an external battery. Now it has become known that it will have a USB-C connector for data transfer and a “new proprietary charging connector” – which appears to be magnetic. The Reality headset will be presented at WWDC 2023.
The description of the battery resembles the MagSafe charging solution for the iPhone. A cable with a round tip included in the delivery kit is mentioned. It is attached to the headset using a magnet. Cable fastening is fixed by turning after connection.
The external battery itself is the size of an iPhone and resembles a MagSafe battery for it. With the help of a complete cable, it provides up to two hours of autonomous operation of the headset. A USB-C cable is used to charge the battery, which can be connected to the MacBook Pro adapter.
Mark Gurman suggests that larger capacity batteries will be available for a fee. It also seems to him that users will not like such a cumbersome way of connecting power (an old joke about a battery in a suitcase is suggested). On the other hand, the Reality headset itself will indeed become lighter.
