Amazon is making another attempt at creating a Lord of the Rings multiplayer game. The company has announced that it is partnering with Embracer Group – the owner of the intellectual property rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit – for a new open-world MMO set in Middle-earth.
The development of the new game will be led by the studio Amazon Orange County, the same team as the MMO New World. At the moment, the game is “in the early stages of production”. It will be released on PC and consoles, but Amazon has not yet specified when it is expected to be released.
This will be Amazon’s second attempt at a Lord of the Rings MMO. Earlier in 2019, the company announced its plans to create such a game, but after 2 years, the project was canceled. It should be noted that Amazon has the series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”, which is shown on the Prime Video service. However, the company says it has nothing to do with the upcoming MMO game being developed by Amazon Games.
For Lord of the Rings fans, now is a great time to dive into games set in Middle-earth. EA recently released the mobile game Heroes of Middle-earth, and the adventure game Gollum is due out later in the year. Weta Workshop is developing a game in a fantasy universe. Meanwhile, The Lord of the Rings Online MMO is still in development.
