Kino is scheduled for release in February 2024.
Halide, a popular photo app that came out in 2017 with the ability to shoot and edit images in Raw, will never get video support. Instead, its developer, startup Lux, is launching a separate app called Kino that could build on the iPhone’s recently received Video Log option.
Log is a color profile found on some professional video cameras and now available on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. It preserves image information in light and shadow areas, allowing for great flexibility in color rendering and contrast in post-production.
“Log video is to cinematographers what Raw is to photographers. It’s a powerful file format that provides advanced editing capabilities,” says Halide co-founder Ben Sandofsky.
Information about the Kino’s features is scarce, and pricing has yet to be announced. Sandofsky says he used a “simple version” of the Kino app to record his video trailer (in the video below), but didn’t go into details.
