The author of “Game of Thrones” George RR Martin spoke about his visit to the set of “House of the Dragon” and shared his first impression of the episodes of the second season of the show.

“All I have to say about this is… God! I am no stranger to film sets. I have worked in television and film since 1986 when I joined the team behind the revival of The Twilight Zone at CBS. I still remember the rush during the construction of Stonehenge. And, of course, I’ve been filming Game of Thrones in Belfast, Scotland, Morocco and Malta. It was also incredible,” he wrote on his website, Not a Blog.

At the same time, as the writer noted, “nothing compares to the scale of Red Castle and Dragonstone,” which were built at Leavesden Studios in London.

“Huge, awesome, and so damn real, I felt like I’d stepped through a time portal into medieval Westeros. I love castles and have visited dozens of real ones in my time, and none of them compare to our Red Castle.”

George RR Martin also spent two days with Ryan Condal and his writing team discussing the third and fourth seasons of Dragon House.

“These were active, fun discussions and we did a good job… even though two days were not enough. There is so much to cover that I’m not sure 20 days will be enough.”

The writer also reviewed two episodes of the second season of House of the Dragon and called them “great”.

“Of course, I’m hardly being objective when I’m talking about something based on my own work…but I have to say that I thought both episodes were absolutely amazing (and they’re not even finished yet). Dark ones, mind you. Very dark. They can make you cry. (I didn’t cry myself, but my friend did). Powerful, emotional, dizzying. Just what I like.”

The second season of Dragon House is expected to air on HBO in the summer of 2024.

  • House of the Dragon, an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire and Blood, is set approximately 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones (and approximately 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen) during the height of the Targaryen dynasty.
  • The first season reflected political upheaval after Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) was named the chosen heir to King Viserys I (Patty Considine). She later becomes queen and marries her uncle Damon (Matt Smith). Rhaenyra and Damon become embroiled in a power struggle against Rhaenyra’s half-brother, King Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), leading Westeros to the prospect of civil war.
  • At the time of its debut, the show gathered about 10 million viewers and became the biggest premiere of an HBO series in history. The final episode was watched by 9.3 million viewers, despite the fact that it was uploaded to the network on the eve of the official broadcast.
