Game “Oscar” was held – on the night of December 8 in Los Angeles, the famous journalist Jeff Kiley held the anniversary (tenth) annual award ceremony of The Game Awards, where he recognized the best games of this year. We will collect all the main trailers and announcements in a separate article, and here we will sum up as briefly as possible and tell who won the main GOTY / “Best Game of the Year” award, and who left empty-handed.
Who won at The Game Awards 2023
In game development, despite all the difficulties (massive reductions and closure of studios), 2023 seemed to be very fruitful. It’s probably the best year in quite some time for the gaming industry in many ways – it’s been a long time since there’s been such a huge amount of interesting games, including 10+ years of anticipation, in such a short period of time.
Moving on to the winners, there were generally no surprises — the two main favorites shared most of the awards. The main award, rather predictably, went to Baldur’s Gate 3 from Sven Vinke’s famous RPG studio Larian. Also, Baldur’s Gate 3 additionally received five more awards:
- “Player’s Voice” (Player’s Voice – the only TGA nomination, where the winner is determined by the absolute majority of user votes);
- Best Actor (Neil Newbon for Astarion);
- “Better community support”;
- “Best RPG”;
- “Best multiplayer”;
By the way, Sven Vinke really came to the ceremony in armor.
The second favorite of this year’s The Game Awards – Alan Wake 2 – took three statuettes. The sequel to the psychological action thriller Remedy was praised for its direction, narrative and visual style.
Cyberpunk 2077 was recognized as the Best Service Game, and the HBO series based on The Last of Us – the best adaptation (we are waiting for the second season in 2025). The best mobile game of 2023 was Honkai: Star Rail.
