Thanks to Chiaki4Deck’s open-source Steam Deck OLED now supports full HDR Remote Play with the PlayStation 5 console – something Sony’s official $199 PlayStation Portal device can’t do. The Liquid Crystal Steam Deck can also play HDR remotely, but only when connected to an external HDR display or HDR to SDR conversion on its own display. However, HDR Remote Play only works with PS5.
Chiaki4Deck is an open source PlayStation Remote Play client optimized for Steam Deck. PS Remote Play is officially supported on Windows, as well as Android and iOS. Chiaki4Deck is aimed at Linux users and console mods and allows remote play from non-officially supported client devices.
Sony PlayStation Portal is simply not built for HDR Remote Play. Its IPS display doesn’t support HDR, limiting its competitiveness against portable OLED devices. With this news, the meaning of his existence becomes even more ghostly.
With the latest Chiaki4Deck 1.5.0 update, the Steam Deck OLED becomes the ultimate PlayStation handheld. This is ironic considering that the original PS Vita was actually the first OLED gaming laptop.
In addition, Sony’s PlayStation Portal does not have its own gaming capabilities. As for the PS Vita, its use with Remote Play and PS5 is only hindered by Sony’s own software limitations, as the device works flawlessly with PS4 Remote Play.
So virtually the entire PlayStation catalog is now available to play on the Steam Deck in one software way or another. And this method offers better quality than Sony’s own special gadget.
Valve introduced the Steam Deck OLED with a 7.4″ display and several improvements starting at $549
