The film, inspired by the character and world of the writer Emmanuel Arsan, based on the script by Rebecca Zlotovsky (“Other People’s Children”), was shot in Paris and Hong Kong.
The main female role in the first English-language version of the film “Emmanuel” will be played by Noemi Merlan (“Portrait of a Girl on Fire”), and Will Sharp (“White Lotus”) will play the male role. The cast also featured two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts (“Mulholland Drive”), Jamie Campbell Bower (“Stranger Things”), Chacha Huang (“Paper House”) and Anthony Wong (“Infernal Affairs”).
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it is known that the Audrey Divan adaptation will differ from Goodbye Emmanuel, the 1977 blockbuster and cult film that starred Sylvia Christel as the wife of a French diplomat who embarks on a sex trip.
Divan’s other famous film, The Event, which told the story of a young woman’s illegal abortion in the 1960s, won the Golden Lion at the 2021 Venice Film Festival. César Award-winning Noëm Merlan recently made her English-language debut in Tar with Cate Blanchett.
