Although NHTSA is calling the process a “recall,” the problem will be fixed through an over-the-air update that the automaker has already prepared.
According to Engadget, 120,423 Model S and X models manufactured between 2021 and 2023 may have a door safety issue that causes the doors to unlock and open in a crash.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem increases the risk of injuries and means that electric vehicles do not meet federal safety regulations. The automaker has already released a free over-the-air update and is expected to send notification letters to owners in February.
Earlier this month, Tesla “recalled” more than 2 million electric cars due to safety issues with Autopilot. The company also released an update that should ensure drivers are alert when using the system.
Meanwhile, a recent study by LendingTree found that Tesla drivers in the U.S. were involved in more accidents than drivers of any other vehicle brand last year, with 24 accidents per 1,000 drivers.
