The adaptation of The Last of Us knocked House of the Dragon off the pedestal, while keeping the prize for the most pirated downloads in the HBO family.
The Last of Us is the most pirated series in 2023. It is followed by The Mandalorian and Loki, both from the Disney+ family.
Game of Thrones topped the list of most pirated series for several years in a row, but the lead ended after the show ended. Further Disney+ releases filled the void, with Wanda/The Vision and The Mandalorian winning in 2020 and 2021, respectively. HBO then recaptured the title with House of the Dragon.
What’s most striking is that the top ten is dominated by content from paid subscriptions, confirming that many people prefer piracy to buying yet another subscription. At the same time, the series of Netflix, which currently dominates the streaming platform, are absent from the list.
The ranking is based on BitTorrent traffic and represents only a small part of the piracy landscape.
- The debut season of The Last of Us was released last year and consisted of 9 episodes, which constantly broke ratings records during broadcasts. One of Us eventually became HBO’s most-watched series of all time. In early December, the IMDb website named the series as the best show of 2023, and named the lead actor Pedro Pascal “star of the year”.
- The fact that the series was renewed was announced two weeks after the release of the last series of the first in March. And already in August, the co-authors announced as many as 4 seasons for the post-apocalyptic show. HBO also announced that the second season of The Last of Us will not be released until 2025.
- The sequel will adapt the second game of the series The Last of Us Part 2, and the action will take place after the traumatic events at the Santa Barbara hospital. It will also feature the character of Abby, who could potentially be played by Caitlin Deaver (“Education”, “Nobody’s Gonna Save You”). The most interesting thing about this news is that the actress looks a lot like Ellie in The Last of Us games, and her fans promoted her for the role when the idea of a film adaptation came up in the 2010s. Deaver also played the role of Nathan Drake’s daughter in the epilogue of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
