The famous YouTube channel JerryRigEverything released the traditional top of the Smartphone Durability Awards 2023, where it named the winners in many categories. Apple didn’t win any awards for repairability last year, but the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max won first place for internal build quality. Pixel 7a from Google became the strongest smartphone.
Fairphone 5 is recognized as the most repairable, as each of its components can be easily replaced with a screwdriver, and spare parts are easily purchased from the manufacturer. This business model eliminates the need to browse online stores in search of spare parts. The Fairphone 5 also comes with a 5-year limited warranty. Unfortunately, the device is not available in many regions.
Second place in terms of repairability was taken by Pixel 8 Pro, spare parts for which are also available. In addition to a screwdriver, a hot hair dryer is also required for its repair, but the process is still simpler than that of other manufacturers.
ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate has become less repairable. Three separate circuit boards, two batteries, and many ribbons of cables, glue, and screws are any repairman’s nightmare. But on the other hand, ROG Phone 7 Ultimate won the title of the most innovative smartphone thanks to such elements as a motorized cover that opens the copper radiator.
The channel considers the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max to be the “coolest” in terms of assembly aesthetics, although Zack commented on Apple’s deceptive marketing tactics regarding “titanium” – instead of a solid piece of titanium, Apple only uses a thin layer on top of aluminum.
Among the smartphones that are the least difficult to repair, the excellent Pixel Fold from Google is also mentioned.
