At CES 2024, AMD introduced the Ryzen 7 8000G processor family for AM5 with integrated RDNA 3 graphics. The most powerful Ryzen 7 8700G chip with Radeon 780M costs $329, and its graphics part competes in performance with NVID desktop graphics cards.
Despite the nomenclature that suggests a new generation of CPUs, the processors are the Zen4/RDNA3 notebook variant for desktop PCs. The Ryzen 8000G series are AMD’s first AM5 socket chips with the XDNA Ryzen AI Neural Processing Unit (NPU). This only applies to the older 8-core Ryzen 7 8700G and 6-core Ryzen 5 8600G. The younger 6-core 8500G and 4-core 8300G use a smaller Phoenix chip without a neuroprocessor. The latter are equipped with Zen4c cores. The Ryzen 8300G will only be available to OEMs.
All processors have a default TDP of 65W and are equipped with integrated RDNA3 graphics: Radeon 780M (12CU), Radeon 760M (8CU) or Radeon 740M (4CU).
AMD compares the 8700G and 8600G models with Intel’s Core i7-14700K with integrated Xe-LP graphics. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 770 has 32 executive units and is less powerful than the Xe-LPG architecture in the new Core Ultra 100 Meteor Lake series. Intel has not yet released a series of processors with integrated Alchemist graphics.
The Ryzen 8600G is expected to outperform the i7-14700K by up to 3.4x in 1080p gaming, with the 8700G delivering up to a 4x advantage.
AMD also compares the 8700G to a Core i5-13400F-based system with a desktop GeForce GTX 1650 graphics card. AMD claims their solution can improve gaming performance by 0.89 to 4.6 times. And the main advantage of AMD is that there is no need to buy a separate discrete adapter, and such a solution is also more energy efficient.
The AMD Ryzen 7 8700G will sell for $329, the Ryzen 5 8600G will cost $229, and the Ryzen 5 8500G will cost $179. All processors will be available on January 31st.
AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D for AM4 will be released on January 31 – almost an analogue of the hit 5800X3D, cheaper by $100
