SpaceX sent and received the first text messages sent via T-Mobile using its Starlink D2D satellites, launched just over a week ago. The project aims to provide a satellite Internet connection for ordinary mobile phones so that T-Mobile customers can stay online even when they are in an area without mobile network coverage.

SpaceX said it plans to publicly launch text services with T-Mobile in 2024, with plans to expand the offering to include voice, data and the Internet of Things in 2025. Globally, SpaceX works with Rogers in Canada, Australia’s Optus, KDDI in Japan, and other companies.

To provide such communication services, larger special versions of Starlink satellites with D2D (direct-to-device) capability are required. SpaceX launched the first six of them on January 2, completing early tests without problems.

“On Monday, January 8th, 6 days after launch, we sent and received our first text messages to unmodified cell phones on the ground and from them to our new satellites in space using TMobile’s network spectrum… [указывая, что] the system is working,” SpaceX wrote on its blog.

As part of the announcement of the scheme, T-Mobile CEO Mike Siewert said the technology is like putting a cell tower in the sky. He added that this could one day eliminate dead zones and allow people to easily contact loved ones even if they are in the ocean.

SpaceX boasted on X (formerly Twitter) an image of two phones exchanging text messages sent via Direct to Cell satellites.

However, attentive users of the social network noticed that the messages sent and received on the two devices did not match – some messages were lost on the way.
