In one of the recent interviews, the mayor of Slavutych Yurii Fomichev talked about the plans to completely switch the city to renewable energy sources. Officials have already developed a corresponding plan called Power Slavutych.
“Power Slavutych” envisages the transition to 100% renewable energy sources. They intend to officially approve this plan in the near future. Yuriy Fomichev said that he considers the plan realistic, and that Slavutych is “the only city in Ukraine that is ready to introduce such changes.” He added that energy efficiency is a priority for Slavutych as a “city of nuclear workers”.
Slavutych has a relatively small budget for development. But the city government is actively developing international cooperation. For example, in 2023, the city’s budget amounted to UAH 300 million, and thanks to international projects, another UAH 417 million was attracted.
Slavutych has a project to install a mini CHP plant that will run on wood waste. Its cost is more than €6 million. Such a thermal power plant could be used to generate electricity for critical infrastructure in the event of a total blackout, such as the one the city experienced at the start of a full-scale Russian invasion. In March 2022, Slavutych was completely without electricity for 6 days. Back then, people cooked food in their yards. Currently, Slavutych is completely dependent on gas, so the city authorities are looking for alternative ways to provide electricity.
