YouTube channel DIY Perks outsmarted Sony engineers and remade the PlayStation 5 into a slim compact device with a built-in screen. The enthusiast has completely redesigned the cooling and power system of the console.
So, one of the thickest elements of the S5 is the massive cooling radiator.
It was replaced with a thinner copper panel.
In addition, the new radiator is located on the side, and not on top of the motherboard.
Heat pipes transfer heat from the processor to it. The craftsman made copper heat sinks.
…and nickel-plated them at home using electrolysis.
The massive PlayStation 5 cooler has been replaced by four small and thin ones.
The system as a whole worked, but the console “flew” after some time of operation due to overheating.
Then the design was improved by adding another radiator and heat pipes to it.
Small fans have been replaced by powerful models for laptops.
The result exceeded expectations – the console worked at a temperature of only 42 ° C at full load. Moreover, it was possible to reduce the speed of the coolers and they worked very quietly. With this result, we moved on to the aesthetic design.
We created a plastic case based on the original color and design.
Also added two aluminum panels on the sides.
Then they added speakers.
…and finally the building was closed.
A stand was attached to the case.
Here’s what happened compared to the size of the PlayStation 5 Slim.
Then it was the turn of the OLED screen from the Alienware laptop (unfortunately, the diagonal was not specified, but the screen is quite large, maybe 17″).
After installing the display, the original thick power supply was replaced with a compact GaN model. In addition, it was brought outside and placed on a wire, like a laptop PSU.
The authors enjoyed the emotions of the game on the console in various scenarios after several weeks of working on it, compared its performance with laptops and expressed regret that Sony did not make such a PlayStation 5 itself.
