Researchers at the Mohammed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in Abu Dhabi (MBZUAI) have developed a technology that can simulate handwriting based on a few paragraphs of written material. To do this, the researchers used a transformer model, a type of neural network designed to learn the context and meaning of sequential data, Bloomberg reports.
The MBZUAI team received a patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office for the artificial intelligence system. They haven’t brought this feature to market yet, but it’s a step forward in an area that has attracted the attention of scientists for years. The technology can help the injured to write without picking up a pen if they need handwritten text for some reason, but it also risks opening the door to widespread counterfeiting and abuse.
