At the time, on Rotten Tomatoes, the series’ 4th season received a 92% based on 73 reviews from critics and only 69% from audiences.

After the season 4 debut of True Detective , titled Night Country , showrunner Issa Lopez headed to X to push back against some viewers unhappy with the show’s new direction.

“So if you enjoyed last night’s episode of True Detective and you have a Rotten Tomatoes account, maybe go there and leave a review?”, Lopez wrote in a remote message. “Brothers and hardcore fans of the first season set themselves the goal of lowering the rating.”

After Lopez’s publication, the audience rating increased to 74%.

“Review bombing” is a term often used to refer to the actions of fans who band together to lower the audience rating of a film or TV series on platforms such as Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB, etc.

Lopez didn’t say why she thinks “True Detective” fans tried to downgrade “Night Country,” but franchises with female leads and/or mostly female casts are often the targets of review bombing. According to Variety , the same thing happened with Captain Marvel and the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot.

This time, the action of the detective thriller takes place in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska, where two female police officers investigate the mysterious disappearance of six employees of a scientific research institute. Two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster and former boxer Cali Reis starred in the series.

Based on several reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, many fans are upset that Nick Pizzolato, showrunner of the first three seasons, is no longer helming the project.

Simultaneously with the world premiere on HBO and Max, the first episode (out of 6 in total) of the fourth season of the series “True Detective” was also released on Megogo with Ukrainian dubbing.

According to HBO, the debut episode was watched by 2 million viewers on the night of the premiere.
