Apple will be the first company to receive chips manufactured using TSMC’s upcoming 2nm process. TSMC is expected to start manufacturing 2nm chips from the second half of 2025.
Terms like “3nm” and “2nm” refer to the specific architecture and design rules that TSMC uses for the chip family. The reduction in node size corresponds to a smaller transistor size, so more transistors can fit on the processor, leading to increased performance and more efficient power consumption, MacRumors reports.
Apple switched to 3nm processors for its iPhones and Macs this year. Both the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro models and the M3 series chips in Mac computers are built on a 3nm process, which is an upgrade from the previous 5nm process. The transition from 5nm technology to 3nm brought a noticeable increase in the speed of the GPU by 20%, the CPU by 10% and twice the speed of the neural engine of the iPhone, as well as similar improvements in the Mac.
TSMC is building two new infrastructure facilities for the production of 2-nm chips and is working on getting permission to build a third. The transition to 2nm will cause TSMC to switch to gate-all-around field effect transistor (GAAFET) transistors instead of FinFET, so the manufacturing process will be more complicated. GAAFETs provide higher speed with smaller transistor size and lower operating voltage.
New processors are significantly more expensive: the cost of 2 nm TSMC wafers will increase by 50% – Apple will be the first to feel it
