iOS 18 promises to be the biggest update to Apple’s mobile OS

RCS and Siri with generative AI: iOS 18 promises to be the biggest update to Apple's mobile OS

iOS 18 is scheduled to be announced at WWDC in June, and it will be a big update with tons of new AI features. Apple sees iOS 18 as “one of the biggest iOS updates, if not the biggest, in the company’s history.”

Apple hopes iOS 18 can be its most ambitious and compelling update in years, reports 9to5mac. In addition to the main new AI features, iOS 18 will have “much more” on the iPhone. “Apple’s head of software development, Craig Federighi, told employees last year that the OS, codenamed Crystal, would have ambitious changes across the board,” Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported.

I’m told that the new operating system is being viewed by the company as one of the biggest updates to iOS. With that in mind, Apple’s developer conference in June should be very interesting.

Gurman previously reported that Apple is planning a number of new AI integrations in iOS 18:

  • An updated version of Siri that is more intelligent and able to take advantage of a new AI system that includes the technology of large language models.
  • Integrating AI into the Messages app, which can “ask questions and autocomplete suggestions.”
  • New AI features for Apple Music to create “auto-generated playlists.”
  • Integrating generative AI into iWork applications, including Keynote and Pages.
  • Adding generative AI features to Xcode so developers can “write new apps faster.”

There aren’t any additional details yet about other new features in iOS 18. However, it’s clear that Apple isn’t just planning to change AI features.
