Scholastic republishes Suzanne Collins’ original dystopian novel with a dozen black-and-white illustrations.
The first Hunger Games novel, about 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen who is forced to participate in the survival games, was published by Scholastic Press in 2008 and has since become a major film franchise. After last year’s success of the prequel, the publishing house decided to develop a new momentum of interest in the series with the help of an illustrated edition.
According to Gizmodo, the publication will be supplemented with more than 30 black-and-white illustrations by Nico Deloro. Collins herself called the artist’s work “impressive” and reminiscent of John Teniel’s illustrations for Alice in Wonderland or Fritz Eichenberg’s engravings in Wuthering Heights.
“I am in awe of Nico’s scratchboard drawings,” she wrote, “and feel they will have the same lasting impact on a new generation of readers.”
As Entertainment Weekly points out, the artwork focuses on Collins’ original novel rather than the film version of the characters and world of Panem. When “Mockingbird” ended Katniss’ story in two parts, the writer decided not to continue the books, and only returned to the franchise in 2020, with “The Ballad of Songbirds and Serpents.” The publisher is currently producing an illustrated version of the first book — and possibly the rest of the books — in what could be one of the last new releases for the Hunger Games series for the foreseeable future.
The movie “The Hunger Games. The Ballad of Songbirds and Serpents” tells the story of the youth of future antagonist Coriolan Snow (Tom Blythe) and one of the first “Hunger Games” organized after the devastating civil war in Panam. 18-year-old Snow’s family is in trouble, but he gets a chance to change his destiny when he is chosen to mentor young Lucy Gray (Rachel Zegler) from District 12.
The production of the prequel cost $100 million (for comparison, the last film in the original series in 2015 cost $160 million) and has now earned $336 million worldwide.
