AMD lifted the embargo on reviews of Ryzen 8000G processors with powerful integrated graphics. The PC Gamer site has published a review of the Ryzen 7 8700G processor, the most productive in the line.
The AMD Ryzen 7 8700G chip has 8 cores and an integrated Radeon 780M graphics card, all for $329. For the most impatient reviewers, we immediately open a spoiler: yes, the processor provides gaming at a resolution of 1080p. But the tests continue to show less exciting results.
The Ryzen 7 8700G uses a monolithic 4nm chip as opposed to the chiplet design of the regular 7000 series processors. It has a dedicated XDNA AI processor, but the main advantage of the 8000 series is the integrated graphics. The Radeon 780M series graphics card with 12 compute units is powerful enough to play almost any current game at Full HD resolution, especially if you include AMD’s scaling technologies.
Eight cores and 16 processor threads provide an adequate level of single- and multi-threaded performance. The chip has 16 MB of L3 cache, a clock frequency of up to 5.1 GHz and a TDP of 65 W. The Ryzen 7 8700G has 8 PCIe 4.0 lanes – not a problem now, but it will become a bottleneck for PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics cards.
The Radeon 780M video chip is based on the RDNA 3 architecture with 12 computing cores, which gives it 768 shader cores with a clock frequency of up to 2.9 GHz. The Vega 8 video in the 5700G is 3 generations behind and clocked at just 2.0GHz. This game is completely different categories.
Next, PC Gamer tests the 8700G and 8600G processors in synthetic benchmarks, rendering, encoding and compression. In short, the performance of the Ryzen 7 8700G is roughly in the middle between the 7700X and 7600X chips. The average CPU temperature in games is about 20% lower than the 7700X and 10 degrees lower than the 7600X. The power consumption of both processors is about 40% less than the 7700X and 7600X.
The German site ComputerBase visually tested the integrated graphics in popular games compared to entry-level gaming systems. In short, the 8700G’s performance is roughly twice that of its predecessor, the 5700G, but it’s still a long way from the 780M GPU on systems with NVIDIA GTX 1650 and Radeon RX 6400 graphics cards.
