Neil Druckman on Naughty Dog’s YouTube channel unexpectedly announced that The Last of Us Part 3 may well be in development. He says he only has the concept in mind, but noted that there is likely another chapter to this story.
“The first game had this pure concept of the unconditional love a parent has for their child. Second, once we got into this idea of wanting justice at all costs, justice for the ones you love, we felt like there was a pure concept and there was a through line from the first game, about love. If we never get to do this again, it’s a great endpoint. One last bite of the apple, the story is over.”
“I don’t have a story, but I have that concept that to me is as exciting as the first one, as exciting as the second one, is its own thing, and yet has this through line for all three. So it feels like there’s probably another chapter to this story.”
In a previous interview, Druckmann mentioned an already written story for Joel’s brother, Tommy, which takes place after the events of The Last of Us Part 2:
“Headlines across the industry were like, ‘Naughty Dog unveils The Last of Us Part 3,’ and that’s really wrong. It was always a small story, it was never a full title. At the time, Naughty Dog had big priorities to get our process right , to address work-life balance issues. Based on where we were, I didn’t do that. I want to prioritize the story because that story has been shelved. And I still believe that one day it will see the light of day. I don’t know , whether it will be a game or a show is yet to be determined, but I hope we will one day.”
The aforementioned video, Grounded II: Making The Last of Us Part II, is a documentary detailing the making of the second game.
Naughty Dog has canceled The Last of Us Online multiplayer. The company will focus on individual projects
