The Wall Street Journal claims that Elon Musk actually created an atmosphere of pressure among Tesla’s friends, business partners and management that prompted, in particular, members of the board of directors to use drugs with him in order to stay on good terms with him.
Citing witnesses, the publication reports that in recent years, at Musk’s parties, he was seen using ketamine in the form of a nasal spray and drinking liquid ecstasy from a water bottle. Current and former CEOs and board members of Tesla and SpaceX, some of whom have invested tens of millions of dollars in Musk’s companies or have significant stock options tied to their positions, have also used drugs.
Musk has effectively created a culture of drug use in which his closest business associates fear losing their wealth and social status if they upset the billionaire and refuse to do drugs with him.
The relationship between Musk and his directors has been exposed and sharply criticized by a Delaware judge, who cited the board’s conflict of interest in her ruling that Musk’s $55 billion compensation package was excessive.
Some of Musk’s friends and executives felt that they had to take banned substances with him because otherwise it might upset him. They also didn’t want to risk the “loss of social capital” of being around Musk.
Earlier, Musk responded to the drug-taking accusations in his characteristic X manner: “Whatever I do, I have to keep doing it!”
… when simultaneously leading Tesla to all the world’s most valuable cars (Model Y is a selling vehicle on Earth) and SpaceX to all the world’s most valuable space companies (~80% of all costs for orbits in recent years).
Whatever I’m doing, I should obviously keep doing it!
