Bluesky currently has more than 3 million users, but that number could grow rapidly as it goes public.
Bluesky started as an internal project at Jack Dorsey’s Twitter (collaboration ended after Elon Musk took over the company) and is functionally somewhat similar to X and its alternative from Meta Threads.
By default, publications are displayed in a chronological feed, although later you can join numerous algorithmic ones created by other users. The company has announced that it will eventually take a similar approach to content moderation, allowing third parties to create their own labeling services for Bluesky content.
The service is still much smaller than most of its peers and lacks direct messaging or private profile features. Like Mastodon and other services built on the ActivityPub protocol, Bluesky runs on its own open source standard called the AT Protocol, which should allow you to move your data and content from one server to another.
Bluesky previously launched mobile push notifications, shared user lists, email verification, advanced channel and stream options for sorting and filtering posts, media tabs on user profiles, a Like tab on your own profile, and more.
