Samsung has repeatedly faced criticism for excessive efforts of artificial intelligence in photo processing – for example, when the image of the moon looked too artificial when using the Scene Optimizer function, or the unexpected appearance of a Hollywood smile in a baby when the Remaster tool was activated.
In a recent interview with Techradar, Samsung Vice President Patrick Chomet defended the photo processing process on the company’s smartphones:
“Last year there was a nice video by Marcus Brownlee about the image of the moon. Everyone debated whether it was a fake or a real picture. And there is no real image. You have sensors to capture something or reproduce what you see. You can say it’s a real image, but if you used AI to optimize the zoom, auto focus, scene, is that real? Or filters? There is no real image, period.”
Companies like Apple, Google and Samsung are increasingly combining multiple images to create the best one, but with the rise of artificial intelligence, the effort to “finish” reality will only increase (Samsung’s new Galaxy S24 and S24 Ultra are the latest example).
At the same time, Chomet says Samsung’s strategy is to give consumers a choice: a way to capture a “moment” and a way to create a “new reality.” Both use AI, he said, but the latter’s results are watermarked and metadata to make sure people can tell the difference.
Chomet also emphasized the need to regulate the AI industry, which Samsung “plans to help with.”
