Recently, rumors spread online that the Russians are allegedly using SpaceX satellite internet in the occupied territories of Ukraine, buying terminals through the UAE.
The information has not yet been officially confirmed, but some experts do not rule out such a possibility, in particular the author of the Telegram channel “About communication from Serhiy Flash:
“Yesterday, our mass media received information that the Russians bought a large batch of Starlinks in Dubai. The accuracy of the information should be verified by our intelligence, but I fully assume this option. SpaceX provides its services in our southern occupied territories, where the enemy can use Starlink.”
If we recall previous events, the work of Starlink in the occupied regions previously provided for the possibility of “manual control” – it is worth recalling the story of how SpaceX deactivated communication near the coast of Crimea, preventing an attack by Ukrainian surface drones. Musk then argued for this decision by the fact that he “does not want to involve the United States in war.”
Ultimately, the Pentagon committed to procuring terminals for the Armed Forces that would work where needed, and in September 2023 announced that it had contracted Starlink to provide services to support Ukraine, without disclosing further details. Given this, it is quite likely that the US Department of Defense could deactivate the terminals in the occupied Ukrainian territories, if they are indeed there.
Can Russian EWs jam Starlink — there are still no effective means, but prevention will not hurt
