MSI and Asus have revised their warranty obligations for OLED monitors. Now some models of these manufacturers are subject to warranty obligations regarding panel burnout.
On Monday, it emerged that the warranties offered on Asus’ OLED displays have been subtly upgraded to now include a 2- or 3-year burn-in warranty. Less than 24 hours later, MSI responded by announcing a new 3-year burn-in warranty on some of its own OLED displays.
OLED panels are becoming more common in gaming monitors due to the better image quality and speed they provide compared to IPS and LCD displays. But panel burnout remains a problem for many consumers. Static elements such as on-screen maps and player icons can make the problem worse, especially during long gaming sessions. Many gamers also automatically hide the Windows taskbar to avoid burnout. Since OLED monitors typically cost a lot more than alternatives with comparable specs, warranties that don’t cover burn-in can seem like an expensive gamble.
MSI’s warranty page for gaming monitors has been updated to include the criteria required to make a claim for burn-in damage, which is measured as a visible brightness difference of more than 3.5% at 50 percent gray coverage. The same page also states that the warranty will be voided if MSI’s OLED Care feature (a suite of solutions designed to reduce the risk of panel burn-in that is enabled by default on supported displays) is disabled or otherwise modified.
Asus has not yet officially announced an extended warranty on OLED panels and has not updated its main warranty page. However, the specifications section of some OLED monitors now explicitly states that panel burn-in is covered by a 2- or 3-year warranty. All in all, new models come with a longer warranty period.
