The service for generating images has already been used to create fake photos of the arrest of Donald Trump.
With Midjourney, it seems you can create images of anything, including a fake Biden smiling and firing a machine gun, or Trump meeting Pope Francis in the Oval Office. However, during the election season in the United States, this opportunity may disappear, writes Bloomberg.
Midjourney CEO David Holtz says the company is “close” to banning photos of Biden and Trump for the next 12 months.
“I know it’s fun to take pictures with Trump – I take pictures of Trump. It is really aesthetically interesting. However, it is better to back off a little during these elections. Let’s see.”
Deepfakes of Trump’s arrest, like the photo of the Pope wearing a Balenciaga puffer jacket, were created through Midjourney’s free trials, so the company restricted access to its image generator.
The company currently has rules in place that prohibit the creation of “misleading images of public figures” and “images of potentially misleading events.” Bloomberg was still able to generate modified images of Trump covered in spaghetti using the old version of the Midjourney system, but the new version refused to generate such content.
Other tech companies have also taken steps to prevent political disinformation, or at least make it easier to identify. ChatGPT will soon begin adding watermarks to images created with DALL-E 3, and Meta is working on technology that will be able to detect and indicate whether an image, video or audio clip has been generated using AI.
Joe Biden’s deepfake in which he “touches” his granddaughter’s breast will be left on Facebook
