The Ukrainian authorities have made the second loud statement regarding the Telegram messenger in recent days. Yesterday, a representative of the Ministry of Defense’s GUR stated that Telegram includes a number of threats to the security of Ukraine. And now the head of the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting Olha Gerasimyuk predicts punitive measures to influence the messenger.
In one of the recent interviews, the head of the National Council noted that Telegram ranks eighth among the companies that have the greatest influence on the audience. At the same time, according to Olga Gerasimyuk, Telegram was in the first place among the sources that spread the most disinformation about the events in Buch at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, the authorities tried to establish contact with the Telegram administration, but to no avail.
“There is no one to talk to in Telegram,” Gerasimyuk said. — We tried to appeal to Telegram, to the platform. We sent several letters, we found e-mail addresses somewhere on the Internet, to ask them to enter into some kind of communication with us, to remove some toxic content that we observed, and people complained about it. But there is no answer.”
The official believes that fines and state control of Telegram and other companies that provide digital services are only a matter of time.
