In 2018, a gunman killed and injured dozens of people at a high school in Parkland, Florida – now The Shotline Project has used the voices of the slain children to make robocalls to lawmakers to lobby for stronger gun laws in the US.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, the project uses the synthesized voices of six shot children (some as young as 10 years old). Anyone can order a call – just enter a zip code and The Shotline will find a local representative to make the call.
“I came back because my parents artificially recreated my voice so I could call you,” says the AI-generated voice of Joaquin Oliver, one of the teenagers killed in the Parkland shooting. “Other victims will call too.”
At the time of publication, the website had received over 8,000 hits.
“This is a US problem and we haven’t been able to solve it,” said Oliver’s father Manuel, who started the project with his wife, Patricia. “If we have to use creepy things to fix it, we will.”
To synthesize voices, the Olivers used the function of ElevenLabs, a startup that recently raised more than $80 million in funding. The tool allows you to generate voices in more than 20 languages based on a sample lasting several minutes.
It is reported that Joaquin Oliver’s social media posts were used to synthesize Joaquin Oliver’s voice. Parents and guardians of other victims can also fill out a form and submit recordings of their voices to The Shotline repository.
Meanwhile, the project raises ethical questions about the use of artificial intelligence to create deepfakes of dead people’s voices.
Last week, the Federal Communications Commission ruled that robocalls made using AI-generated voices were illegal, a decision that came after voters in New Hampshire received calls from Biden’s artificial voice urging them to skip the primary. . An analysis by security firm Pindrop revealed that the audio deepfake was also created using software from ElevenLabs.
