According to sources from the Moore’s Law Is Dead YouTube channel, NVIDIA plans to use a new 16-pin power connector on all Blackwell graphics cards. This is the connector through which the older NVIDIA RTX 4000 desktop video cards are powered. The first version of the connector had problems due to melting connectors and failure of video cards.
According to the video blogger, NVIDIA will actually oblige everyone to use a 16-pin connector on video cards from RTX 5060 or even lower. In the current line of Lovelace video cards, its younger representatives do not use this connector, this applies even to some instances of RTX 4070.
The connector is being prepared for standardization before the release of next-generation video cards later this year “on everything with the NVIDIA sticker on it.” The channel assumes the third revision of the connector for new video cards. Using a single standard will allow NVIDIA to save on components and design of printed circuit boards. Also, users of the company’s video cards will actually be able to forget about the need to have 6-pin or 8-pin connectors on the power supply unit.
But the main strategic goal of NVIDIA, according to the author of the video, will be freedom of use with higher power video cards in the future.
“There’s no reason to really standardize this super-powerful 16-pin connector unless you know that someday you might be able to produce standard enthusiast products around 600 watts.”
AMD allegedly said they considered moving to 12VHPWR, but decided it was an unnecessary new standard with little to no benefit, and that as far as the source is concerned, nothing has changed. Intel allegedly “never heard any discussion about using 12VHPWR”.
In other words, AMD and Intel do not plan to use the connector in the near future. To provide the most powerful Radeon video cards with energy, AMD now uses up to 3 8-pin connectors.
