The American Teledyne FLIR has created a thermal sight with which you can track your own (non-tracing) bullets even during the day.

The US defense contractor Teledyne FLIR has introduced a new thermal imaging sniper sight that helps to see one’s own bullets flying day or night at a distance of up to 2,200 m. The ThermoSight HISS-HD thermal imaging sight allows snipers and machine gunners to hit targets on a large scale.

Today, snipers use specialized rifles and cartridges, sophisticated optics and computer processors that handle all sorts of variables, such as wind strength, air pressure, initial bullet velocity, bullet drop and others, reports NewAtlas. However, despite all this, snipers and machine gunners have to rely on the old and reliable method of tracer shot. These are bullets with an incendiary charge that are combined with ordinary cartridges so that the sniper or machine gunner can determine the trajectory of the shot.

This works, but allows the enemy to see where the fire is coming from. ThermoSight HISS-HD allows the sniper to see shots at long distances just like tracers, even in full daylight. For this, an image sensor with a cryocooler is used, which cools it to very low temperatures. This reduces thermal noise and increases resolution. As a result, with the help of modern processors, a sniper can directly see the heat trace of a bullet in flight.

According to the company, it’s not the first system with this capability, but it’s the first in the industry that can do it with such high (but unnamed) resolution over such a long range. The 2.1 kg HISS-HD scope easily attaches to any standard MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail and can be used with a variety of optical sights and weapon systems.
