“Rings of Power” has renewed its contract with Amazon and is working on the 3rd season

The showrunners of the series

Amazon’s most popular original series has been nominated for an Emmy in 2022, although it has received mixed reviews from longtime fans of Tolkien’s universe.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Patrick McKay and JD Payne, who wrote and produced the first season, have signed a new three-year deal with Amazon and have begun work on the third season of The Ring. Filming of the second has already been completed – the premiere is scheduled for 2024.

“We started this amazing journey with JD and Patrick over five and a half years ago and have never looked back,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios. “We’re blown away by the scope and scale of their vision and the tremendous global success that Rings of Power achieved in its first season. The studio is very pleased to extend our contract with these creators.”

When Amazon acquired the television rights to “The Lord of the Rings,” it committed to filming five seasons of “Rings of Power.”

The first season of The Ring of Power takes place in the Second Age of Middle-earth — thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings — when Sauron and the Elves created the rings of power and then secretly forged the One Ring to rule over the rest. The first season, which cost Amazon at least $450 million, received an 83% from critics and only a 38% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite Amazon claiming The Lord of the Rings is the most-watched original show on its streaming service, only 37% of first-episode viewers finished the series.
