According to Stéphane Séjournet, countries have had “different degrees of commitment” since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine.
France must be “on the right side of history” regarding the war in Ukraine. French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejournet said this in an interview with Le Monde.
In particular, he commented on the information about the disagreements between the country’s President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Ukraine.
“There is no Franco-German conflict; we agree on 80% of issues,” the diplomat noted.
According to him, France and Germany have a common goal – to support Ukraine. At the same time, countries have “different degrees of obligations” since the beginning of a full-scale war in Ukraine, in particular with regard to missiles.
“This issue is not electoral, it is existential. Ukraine is at the center of the election debate because there are actually differences in positions on this issue. I would like it not to be so, and for there to be a broad consensus across party lines.” , – emphasized the head of the French Foreign Ministry.
Possible conflict between Macron and Scholz
The other day, Bloomberg reported that Macron’s conflict with Scholz is causing enormous harm to Ukraine. As journalists noted, public disagreements between the leaders of France and Germany occurred at the worst time for Ukraine.
In particular, Macron gave a clear message at the summit of European leaders in Paris: to help Ukraine win the war and force Russian leader Vladimir Putin to retreat. At the same time, the subtext of his statement “demonstrated disdain for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.”
French officials say Macron sees Scholz as a leader without courage or ambition who cannot think beyond the short term. The chancellor’s close aides also acknowledge that the leaders are not getting along. Thus, in Berlin, Macron is perceived as a monarchical figure who is better at putting forward grandiose ideas than implementing them.
