The London police solved a car “kidnapping”. The organized motoring crime unit has recovered the Ferrari 512M that thieves stole from Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger 28 years ago during the 1995 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola.
Fraudsters stole Berger’s 512M and Jean Alesi’s 355 from a hotel car park during the 1995 race. Then Berger allegedly arrived when the thief was driving his Ferrari, reports Motor1.
Police recovered Berger’s 512M with the help of a Ferrari. In January, the automaker told investigators that it inspected the car on behalf of an American customer who bought the car from a broker in Great Britain.
The police found out that the car left for Japan after it was stolen. In late 2023, it made its way to the UK, where the Metropolitan Police confiscated the Ferrari to prevent it from being taken out of the country.
We worked ‘quickly’ with partners including the National Crime Agency, as well as Ferrari and international car dealerships, and this collaboration helped us understand the car’s history and prevent it from being taken out of the country.
said lead investigator Mike Pilbeam.
Police are still investigating; no arrests were made. By the way, Alesi’s F355 has not been found yet.
Despite the car theft, Berger and Alesi were successful at the 1995 San Marino Grand Prix, where Alesi finished second and Berger third.
