SpaceX has announced the date of the third Starship test flight. It will take place on March 14.
Starship’s first test took place last April and progress has since slowed as SpaceX had to build a flood protection system at the site to avoid damage during the launch. After months of regulatory approval, Starship’s second flight took place in November 2023.
SpaceX began testing the super-heavy launch vehicle Starship last year, and the spacecraft has already completed several flights to demonstrate its landing capabilities. NASA has contracted Starship to land astronauts on the moon, and as SpaceX moves forward to build the world’s largest rocket in Texas, it is also working with NASA to fly astronauts, Wccftech reports.
Late last month, NASA and SpaceX shared major news about Starship testing, when the space agency announced that it and SpaceX had conducted tests of Starship’s second stage docking mechanism. This is an indispensable part of the rocket, because with its help the astronauts will be able to get inside the Starship for landing. The crew will take off from Earth on a NASA Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, and before descent will transfer to a Starship in lunar orbit.
