Last week, Musk sued OpenAI, accusing it of abandoning its original mission of “developing AI for the benefit of humanity” in favor of making money.

The billionaire also criticized competitors (Mask has his own AI company xAI) for refusing to publish the open source code of the developments — and instead announced the open source of the code for his Grok chatbot.

“xAI will open source Grok this week,” Musk wrote in a note on X.

The move will allow the public to experiment with the code behind the xAI technology. Meta, for example, has open-sourced its LLaMa 2, and Google is offering third-party access to the AI model code called Gemma.

Reuters, meanwhile, notes that while open-source technology can accelerate innovation, it could be used by terrorists to create chemical weapons or even to develop conscious superintelligence beyond human control.

Musk said last year that he wanted to create a “third party” that could monitor companies developing artificial intelligence. Seeking an alternative to OpenAI and Google, the billionaire launched xAI to create “truth-seeking artificial intelligence.” In December, the startup launched a Grok chatbot for Premium+X subscribers.

Earlier on Lex Friedman’s podcast, Musk stated:

“The word open in OpenAI stands for open source, and it was created as a non-profit open source organization. And now it is closed for maximum profit.”

OpenAI, meanwhile, responded to Musk’s lawsuit by publishing internal correspondence in which the billionaire (he co-founded OpenAI) supported the creation of a commercial organization. Elon also offered the company a merger with Tesla, sought full control and wanted the position of CEO. OpenAI says that after Musk’s proposal was rejected, he left the project and failed to provide the promised funding of nearly $1 billion — the startup later partnered with Microsoft to launch ChatGPT.
