Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Part 2 added $81 million from 72 international markets in its second week of release, bringing its overseas total to $210.5 million. Combined with a hefty domestic haul ($157 million), Dune: Part Two in 11 days $367 .5 million — only $66.4 million less than the first part earned in total.
The film debuted in China over the weekend with 142.1 million yuan ($20 million), the country’s biggest Hollywood opening of 2024 (for Timothée Chalamet and Villeneuve, the biggest ever), according to Deadline. The Chinese network IMAX earned 33% of the total – $6.5 million (the director chose 70 mm film for the second “Dune”, which provides higher detail and realism – by the way, the film was shot with Ukrainian-made lenses).
The second Dune’s Chinese launch totals were about the same as 2021’s Dune, and higher than Robert Pattinson’s Batman (+95%), Blade Runner 2049 (+183) %), “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Serpents” (+330%) and “Indiana Jones and the Clock of Fate” (+772%).
The top 5 markets for the film today include the UK ($24.8M), China ($20M), France ($19.4M), Germany ($18.2M) and Australia ($11.6M). Japan will release the film this coming Friday.
In Ukraine, “Dune: Part Two” had the best start in the history of Warner Bros. since the beginning of the war – 32.6 million hryvnias for the first weekend. Also, the film entered the three most successful launches of the studio’s films in Ukraine in the entire history and was second only to the films “Dune” in 2021 with UAH 34.3 million and “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Green de Wald” in 2018 with UAH 39.2 million.
- The first part of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” won the Oscars 2022 and received as many as six statuettes, including awards for the best editing, music, sound, visual effects and cinematography (the total box office of the film is $401.8 million). The production of the second part cost $190 million — another $100 million was spent on promotion (previously, the premiere was postponed due to strikes in Hollywood, so that after completion the actors could take part in advertising). It is worth noting that the initial sale of tickets for “Dune 2” also exceeded the indicators of the first one by 50%.
- Dune: Part Two continues director Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s cult sci-fi novel. According to the synopsis, in the sequel, Paul Atreid teams up with the Chani and the Fremen (a tribe of desert people in the Dune universe) to seek revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skåsgard, Dave Bautista and Javier Bardem return to their roles. Also appearing are new characters played by Austin Butler (the villain Fade-Rout Harkonnen), Florence Pugh (Princess Irulan) and Christopher Walken (Shaddam IV).
- On Rotten Tomatoes, “Dune: Part Two” received quite high ratings – 93% from critics and 95% from the audience.
