Both, in different ways, tried to create their own “platform for freedom of speech.”
Last summer, former US President Donald Trump offered Musk to buy his social network Truth Social, The Washington Post reports. At the time, Elon was still running a “chaotically absorbed” Twitter — and was just hatching plans to turn it into X and hand it over to Linda Jaccarino.
At the same time, the conversation did not end with discussing a potential deal — two unnamed sources told the Post that Musk and Trump continued to discuss business and politics on several occasions.
In early March, Trump met again with Musk and several other Republican donors in Florida. The New York Times wrote at the time that the ex-president was looking for sponsors for the election campaign, and Elon on X later wrote that he “does not donate money to any of the candidates for the role of president of the United States.”
Back in November 2022, Musk restored Trump’s Twitter account, which was blocked after calls to storm the Capitol in January 2021. However, he continues to use his own social network, Truth Social, despite the fact that he has far fewer subscribers there.
Trump’s free speech platform has faced significant financial challenges since launching in 2022. Truth Social lost tens of millions of dollars last year, according to Securities and Exchange Commission filings.
