1,000-horsepower Porsche Taycan Turbo GT sets records at Laguna Seca and (previously) Nürburgring

A week ago, Porsche announced a performance version of its electric sedan, which was called the Taycan Turbo GT. This is the most powerful Taycan with a peak power of 1092 hp. (815 kW) and with a curb weight reduced by 72 kg. He currently holds the record at California’s Laguna Seca circuit.

In January, a camouflage-clad Taycan Turbo GT lapped the 20.8km Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:05.55, 18 seconds faster than Tesla’s best time with its Model S Plaid (and 26 seconds faster than the Taycan Turbo that previously was the fastest option).

The new Porsche Taycan beat Tesla Model S Plaid’s time on the 20-km Nurburgring by 18 seconds

The Taycan Turbo GT lapped the 3.6 km Laguna Seca track in 1:27.87, which is a record for a production electric vehicle at this track, reports ArsTechnica.

The power is 777 hp. (580 kW) in normal mode, but can be increased to 1092 hp. for 10 seconds. Porsche’s Formula E racing program had some influence here: when driving, you can engage an attack mode that boosts power by an additional 160 hp. (120 kW) for 10-second segments. It could be turned on or off with a paddle on the steering wheel for ease of use on the track.

Among the changes under the body is a new rear-wheel drive common to the facelifted Taycan. But the Turbo GT gets a new silicon carbide pulse inverter capable of up to 900V, instead of the 600V inverter in the Taycan Turbo S. The two-speed transmission has also been upgraded to handle the Turbo GT’s 1340Nm of peak torque. .

For weight reduction, go for the Turbo GT with the Weissach package, named after Porsche’s research base near Stuttgart, Germany. This uses carbon fiber to replace heavier trim elements, thinner glass and a lighter audio system, as well as ditching the auto-closing rear boot, one of the two charging ports and even the rear speakers to save the aforementioned 72kg.

The Weissach package also cuts the 0-100 km/h time from 2.2 seconds to 2.1 seconds and allows a top speed of 306 km/h instead of 290 km/h.

Pricing for the 2025 Taycan Turbo GT will start at $230,000 when it hits showrooms this summer.
